Report: Smartphone Robberies Dropped in U.S, Thanks to ‘Kill Switch’

As per the latest report, the rate of smartphone robberies declined in San Francisco, New York and London.

The news is a strong evidence for people who were opposed to the feature of ‘kill switch’ in smartphones.

The kill Switch is safety software which shuts off the cell phone in emergency situations.  It also removes all the personal information of users from the phone.

The main objective of the technology is to cut the number of smartphone thefts in the United States. In 2013, Apple introduced Kill switch, dubbed as Activation lock, in iPhones. Afterwards, Samsung rolled out a similar feature for its Galaxy series.

The recent report from government officials shows that number of thefts and robberies decreased in the last two years. According to the report, the smartphone robberies dropped to 27 percent, whereas the iPhone thefts declined to nearly 40 percent in San Francisco.

In comparison, the proportion of iphone robberies has descended nearly 27 percent in New York. However, the rate of smartphone is relatively lower with only 16 percent.

Eric Schneiderman, an Attorney General of New York States said that kill switch is the major reason behind the massive decline of smartphone thefts. The report is a proof that new kill switch mechanism plays an integral part in the safety of people all around the globe.
