New types of sea crustacean named after well known pop artist Elton John

British pop singer Elton John of Candle in the wind fame has had a new species of sea crustacean named after him. The new crustacean is named L. eltoni, and it looks pretty much like a shrimp; even though it is found in coral reefs in Indonesia.

According to a study published in the journal ZooKeys, researchers came across eltoni while carrying out some marine research in the coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

Funny enough, the crustacean was found inside another invertebrate that locked itself to the walls of the reef. Scientists revealed that the crustacean was in a commensal relationship with its host, meaning that the shrimp-like crustacean benefits from its invertebrate host, but the later does not benefit or lose in any way.

James Thomas of the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography disclosed that considering the fact that he listened to Elton John’s music throughout his career within his lab, sighting the unusual creature under his microscope made him see a shape that looked that a pair of footwear worn by the star singer to an event.

According to Thomas, “When this unusual crustacean with a greatly enlarged appendage appeared under my microscope after a day of collection, an image of the shoes Elton John wore as the ‘Pinball Wizard’ came to mind,” he said in a statement.

It is now known what Elton John’s reaction to the name of the new sea creature would be, but it would sure excite some of his worldwide fans while it will keep the tongues of others wagging.
